# Coat of arms designer

Choose a shield, divide the field, add an ordinary and charges, and watch the blazon write itself in proper heraldic English. Download your arms as SVG or PNG.

## How the designer works

Arms are built in layers, the way heralds describe them. Pick a shield shape, then the field: one tincture, or divided per pale, quarterly, chequy and so on. Add one ordinary, the bold bands such as a chevron or a bend, then a group of charges, set either in the field around the ordinary or on it.

The blazon under the picture follows the order a herald would use: field, ordinary, then charges, with a chief or bordure named last, as in “Azure, three mullets Argent, a chief Or”. Roundels take their own names, so three gold roundels become three bezants.

The note below the buttons checks the **rule of tincture**: no metal on metal, no colour on colour. It is a custom, not a law. Furs go with anything, and a few famous arms break the rule on purpose.

Download SVG for a sharp file to print, cut or edit, or PNG at 800 pixels wide. Your design is kept in this browser for next time.

**Not a registered coat of arms.** A design made here is not an official grant, and there is no “family” coat of arms belonging to everyone with a surname: arms are granted to individuals by heraldic authorities, such as the College of Arms in England, Wales and Northern Ireland or the Court of the Lord Lyon in Scotland. Use these designs for stories, games, clubs, classrooms and decoration.

## Questions

**Can I register a design made here?**

Not through this site. In England, Wales and Northern Ireland new arms are granted by the College of Arms, and in Scotland by the Court of the Lord Lyon, each with its own process and fees.

**Is this my family's coat of arms?**

No. Arms belong to one person and their descendants, not to everyone with a surname. What you make here is a new design to enjoy, not an inherited or official coat of arms.

**Why am I warned about my tinctures?**

Your design puts metal on metal or colour on colour. You can keep it; the note only explains the heralds' custom.
